Search Foundations (Meet the Authors)

Thursday, December 3, 2020 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EST)

Description

How should IR and IS be reoriented to accommodate information seeking and searching through ubiquitous, wearable, and subtle devices? What indeed are documents when search is implicit and embedded in other activities such as our navigating mixed-reality worlds? These are not primarily technical questions, and so are not to be addressed through the suggestion of algorithms or mathematical models. They are instead foundational questions, and their address means re-imagining the nature of IR and IS: combining them into a new kind of science focused on technology-mediated experience. A science that cuts across disciplinary boundaries, across Snow’s two cultures. That has both a theoretical component that seeks to explain technology-mediated experience and a practical component that designs for it. In this session we will look at the nature of such a science.
